Leaders in Kanungu District seized the occasion of the belated NRM Liberation Day celebrations to petition the government for the expansion of the tarmac road network from Kanungu Town to Kambuga via Enengo, linking to Rukungiri, a vital route for the district.
The event held recently, at the Bishop Comboni College playground, featured Major General Jim Muhwezi, one of the original 27 fighters of the bush war, as the Chief Guest.
Attendees included local council leaders, Members of Parliament, Technical team headed by CAO Awuye Abdallah, Kanungu RDC Ambrose Mwesigye and residents.
The leaders used the opportunity to lobby government to address the issue of road infrastructure development, urging Muhwezi to advocate for their cause.
Muhwezi, also the Security Minister and MP for Rujumbura constituency, reminded party members of the core principles that drove the liberation struggle in the 1980s, emphasizing the importance of upholding these values for the nation’s well-being.
In an emotional address, Muhwezi recounted the hardships endured during the liberation war, stressing the need to protect the gains achieved through sacrifice. He encouraged Ugandans to prioritize wealth creation and education, echoing the NRM’s commitment to parish development model, universal education, and democratic values.
Muhwezi reiterated the NRM’s guiding principles of patriotism, Pan Africanism, socio-economic transformation, and democracy, underscoring their relevance in national development.
Dr. Chris Baryomunsi the Minister for information and national guidance , also in attendance, contributed to education initiatives by donating textbooks to secondary schools in Kinkizi East, aiming to elevate educational standards and prepare students for the modern world.
Addressing concerns raised by local leaders, including the poor state of roads and inadequate electricity supply, assurances were given that these issues would be addressed, with plans to engage the President for resolution.
The Kanungu district LC5 Chairperson Eng. Sam Kajojo highlighted the potential boost in tourism that would accompany the tarmacking of the Enengo road, underscoring the broader economic benefits of infrastructure development.
Kajojo commended the bravery of the liberation fighters, acknowledging the sacrifices made for the nation’s freedom.
In her remarks, Kanungu Woman MP Hon. Patience Kinshaba Nkunda celebrated the strides made in women’s empowerment, noting the increased representation of women in leadership roles across the country.
As the event concluded, it underscored the community’s commitment to advancing development and honoring the legacy of the liberation struggle.
